DR. LUIS A. DE LA VEGA    |   Chairman

A natural born linguist, fluent in nine languages, Dr. Luis de la Vega has had a passion for languages since his early childhood in Havana, Cuba. He is a native Spanish speaker who by the age of 12, had taught himself French and German. Like many other Cuban children at the time of the revolution, his parents sent him to live with family in Miami, FL at the age of 14. Having attended an American school in Cuba, he had learned English as a child and once he arrived in the US, his love for language only continued to grow. He was a frequent visitor of the local library where he’d check out books in Russian, German, Italian, and French for some extracurricular fun!

Dr. de la Vega studied language in college and obtained a B.A. with a double major and a double minor in Modern Languages from the University of Miami in 1967, and an M.A. in Modern languages in 1969. He was such a dedicated student and fluent speaker of French, Russian and Spanish that he was asked to teach these languages at UM while he himself was still a student. In 1969 he was offered a fellowship at Florida State University, where he taught various languages while working on his PhD. In 1971 he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, holding a full time teaching position at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.

Dr. de la Vega soon came to the realization that he could offer interpreting and translation services professionally and in 1973 followed his vision to create Professional Translating Services, Inc., one of the few language companies in the country at that time.

As former CEO and now Chairman of Protranslating, Dr. de la Vega is deeply involved in the company’s operations and takes personal interest in his clients. He is obsessed with quality and you will often find him conducting multilingual meetings with diverse members of the team to ensure translation quality and consistent tone and voice for major accounts. Sometimes referred to as the “most interesting man,” he is a funny and engaging storyteller, an entertaining dinner companion who can speak about current events, history and art among other topics in multiple languages. He is also a pianist and an avid collector of classical music and Cuban art. When not in the office you can find him playing with his grandchildren who lovingly call him “Avi”.
